period 1: reform within the existing gov by adding representatives of the people to it and keeping the king

period 2: more extreme reform w/o the king (off w/ head!)

period 3: go crazy, ppl have complete power adn attack the aristocrats and the church

goes nutty: "Reign of terror"

period 4: directory and napoleon, try to fix things and Napoleon takes power
