Context

  • the "situation" (placement) or relationship of something to its surroundings
    • with words, "context" means how a word or words relate and interact to the words around them
      • thus "contextual meaning" is derived from a word's "situation" within a text

Context etymology[edit | edit source]

  • from Latin contextus for "a joining together" or "woven together"
    • con- (with) + texere (to weave)
  • from PIE *teks- "to weave, make or fabricate"
