Semantic = the meaning of words and sentences as formed by their organization and expression

  • a "semantic" meaning is derived from sentence context, word choice, word order, and overall sentence construction or larger discourse (paragraphs, essays, speeches, books, etc.)

Semantics = the study refereence, meaning or truth

  • from Greek simeiotikí, ("semiotics") for "the Doctrine of Signs" (John Locke)
    • i.e., the meaning of a sign (an indication, mark, etc.)
