Verb v. noun pronunciation[edit | edit source]

  • many words have both noun and verb definitions
    • but are pronounced differently as either a noun or a verb
    • the difference is in the shift in "syllable stress" or the "stress pattern"
  • typically for bisyllabic words (two syllables):
      • noun: stress the FIRST syllable
      • verb: stress the SECOND syllable

examples: << to do chart showing the syllabic emphasis

  • contract
  • separate
  • subject

desert, refuse, present, protest, conflict, convert, address, content, suspect, project, converse, import and even perfect

  • trisyllabic' words (three syllables):

typically do not have a distinct stress pattern: attribute, envelope however some do change : duplicate, advocate, syndicate
