Apocryphal

  • Definition:
    • a story or narrative of dubious veracity
    • BUT one that also contains an illuminating aspect of the topic or person
    • ex.
      • George Washington and the cherry tree
        • the story was fabricated but the idea that Washington valued honesty is valid
      • Alexander the Great and Bophesus the horse
        • Alexander may not have actually subdued the wild horse, but the story reflects Alexander's unique leadership qualities
