Verb v. noun pronunciation[edit | edit source]
- many words have both noun and verb definitions
- but are pronounced differently as either a noun or a verb
- the difference is in the shift in "syllable stress" or the "stress pattern"
- typically for bisyllabic words (two syllables):
- noun: stress the FIRST syllable
- verb: stress the SECOND syllable

- trisyllabic' words (three syllables):
typically do not have a distinct stress pattern: attribute, envelope however some do change : duplicate, advocate, syndicate
