Lesson Plans[edit | edit source]
- Perspective Lesson from Brunelleschi and Donatello's wanderings around the ruins of Rome:
- students could employ the same method.
- from the book, Brenelleschi's Dome, author Ross King describes a method that Donatello perhaps used to measure the size of the Roman ruins: "Or he could have employed a quadrant or, even more simply, a mirror, whose use for menusration Fibonacci likewise describes. The surveyor placed the mirror on the ground some distance in front of the object to be measured, then moved himself into a position such that the top of the object appeared in the center of the mirror. The height of the building was then calculated by multiplying the distance between the object and the mirror by the height of the observer divided by his own distance from the glass" (p. 24).
- the equation is thus:
- 1) locate top of object in mirror
- 2a) height = distance from mirror to object X height of observer / distance of observer from mirror;
- 2b) or, H = D1 x H2 / D2
- students could employ the same method.
