Non-finite verb that acts as a modifier or noun

Participles include:

  • past or present tense participle adjectives
  • gerunds (nouns)
  • past perfect participles

note: infinitives are non-finite verbs but not participles

Participle definition

A verb that

  • acts grammatically as a noun or adjective
  • and not as a verb (does not have a subject)
  • but retains its essence as a verb
    • such as to be modified by adverbs
    • have object complements
