Qualities and examples of leadership

Genghis Khan

  • Khan's unique leadership skills brought him from son of a blacksmith to leader of the largest land empire in history
  • his reign was largely military, which guided his organization of conquered lands and peoples
"There is no warrior like Bahadur, and no one else possesses the skills he ha, but he did not suffer from hardship and was not affected by huger of thirst. He thought his liege men could tolerate hardship as well as he could, but they couldn't. A man is worthy of leadership who knows what hunger and thirst are and who can judge the condition of others thereby, who can go at a measured pace and not allow the soldiers to get hungry and thirsty or the horses to get worn out."

Tamerlane (TImur)

  • Tamerlane was a Turkic (central Asia) military leader who seized the Chagatai Khanate in 1370
  • The Chagatai Khanate was ruled by descendants of Genghis Khan's second son, Chagatai
  • Tamerlane was related to but not a direct descendent of Genghis Khan, so he installed a descendent as puppet ruler
    • "puppet ruler" = someone who is in the position of power but does not actually exercise that power or rule, which is exercised by someone else
  • Tamerlane understood the need to legitimate his rule by having a Genghis Khan descendent
