• words that are spelled the same but may have different pronunciations and/or meanings

Verb v. noun pronunciation

• many words have both noun and verb definitions
  • but are pronounced differently as either a noun or a verb
  • the difference is in the shift in "syllable stress" or the "stress pattern"
• typically for bisyllabic words (two syllables):
  • • noun: stress the FIRST syllable
    • verb: stress the SECOND syllable

• trisyllabic' words (three syllables):

typically do not have a distinct stress pattern: attribute, envelope however some do change : duplicate, advocate, syndicate
