  • after Persian Wars losses and the final Greek humiliation of his forces led by his son, Tithraustes, at Eurymedon River by Athenians led by Cimon, Xerxes was murdered by his own ministers
  • Artaxerses, son of Xerses, succeeded him
    • Artexerses focused on consolidation and protection of empire instead of expansion
    • invited Greeks to Sardis (Asia Minor near Ionian coast) to negotatiate an end to all Greco-Persian conflicts
