Participles include:
- past or present tense participle adjectives
- gerunds (nouns)
- past perfect participles
note: infinitives are non-finite verbs but not participles

A verb that
- acts grammatically as a noun or adjective
- and not as a verb (does not have a subject)
- but retains its essence as a verb
- such as to be modified by adverbs
- have object complements
